Mrs Gorilla’s bramble patch

September 10, 2008

Oh yes, it’s brambly…but with the illustrious Tom-Tom the donkey, help was at hand.

Tom-Tom’s friends, two Shetland ponies and the rest of the V-Team made up “Team Ass”, or the “Tom Tom Club” (named after the 80’s new wave band).

The V-Team plus mascot…plus brambles

So: Loppers, gloves, strimmers, equidae and of course us V-Team volunteers to the rescue.

This is currently an ongoing project by the DWT to clear a field full of brambles and the aim is to revert the land back to heath. The field lies in the north of the Upton Heath Nature Reserve and backs on to houses on Corfe Lodge Road, Corfe Mullen.

Assistance from Upton Heath warden Andy and East Dorset warden Nigel was invaluable as they started off the project some years back, when first acquiring the field.

It was clear as soon as we started that this was going to be a long job. Trying to dig the brambles out was hard, so we resorted to lopping and cutting them at ground level. Making sure where we stood, as only earlier that day on the heath two adders were spotted, off we went, like the well oiled machine that is the V-Team; cutting and piling, cutting and piling, repeat.
The day was interspersed with good banter, idle chatter, a pair of buzzards circling high, salmon sandwiches, Tom-Tom nudging, eating plenty of blackberries, Tom-Tom following, and sweat, lots of sweat.

And after a good few bramble scratches later we could relax with a bottle of blackcurrant sparkling wine.

    Love it 🙂

Come and have a go… there’s still plenty of bramble left to go!

I’m up for coming along to clear the rest of the brambles. Tom-Tom makes a great V-Team mascot – do you think anyone would mind if I took him home with me?!
