Though a few weeks have passed since our last blog, the volunteers at Dorset Wildlife Trust have still been doing lots of hard work both at the Beacon Hill Urban Centre and at different reserves including Kingbarrow, Troublefield, Alder Hills, Brownsea Island, Hyer Hyde and Lorton Meadows (where the hedge laying has been completed!).

A sunny day at Kingbarrow, Portland

We have been very lucky with the weather over the past few weeks and have enjoyed working in the sunshine each day! On 13th April the volunteering team (Sam, Becca, Dan and John) headed over to Portland to work with the STEPS youth group at Kingbarrow. Here, it was our job to pull out and burn the invasive cottoneaster that covers a large area of the reserve. Some of the team managed to clear one whole section of the reserve, whilst Dan and John(getting very, very hot!)  burnt everything that we removed, on a fire.

STEPS hard at work...trying not to slide down the hill!

A lot of work has also been carried out at the Beacn Hill Urban Centre, and now we have finally managed to finish both of the ponds at the rear of the centre. The original pond has at last been drained, cleaned, sanded down, painted on the inside and filled with water as well as a couple of mounds of earth and brick created, in which plants can grow. More recently, Sam, Josh and Ed have managed to complete digging the second pond, line it and fill to the top (just until it started to overflow as Josh agreed!)

The pond finally drained!

Finished!

Lining pond number two...

The new pond!

A lot of other work has also been done at the centre, including clearing trees in the car park to make more room for car parking spaces, removing the fungi from the bench at the fornt of the centre and re-painting, and also attatching handles to tins that were put out on the heath for reptiles.

….not forgetting fun with Ruby at Studland beach…!
